How Are Tiles Fixed?

The roof tiles are fixed with help of nails and are hung from the framework of the roof. They are usually hung in parallel rows in a manner that each row overlaps the row below it to prevent the rainwater and to shelter the nails that grip the row below. Roof tiles for special positions also exist, especially in the place where the plains of numerous pitches meet. It includes hip, ridge, and valley tiles. These can be fixed either mechanically or pointed and bedded in cement mortar.

Why is Roofing Important?

Roofing’s provide a protective weather covering to the side of buildings with timber frame, just like a roofing tile. These are hung on the lath that is nailed to timber walls, with tiles specifically designed to cover sides and corners. More often than not, these tiles are molded at the bare end to give them a decorative effect. Mathematical tile is another form which was hung on laths, nailed and plastered. This tiling form resembles of brickwork and later was modified to appear like a brick, it helped to avoid the 18th-century taxes on the brick. In some areas close to the supply source, slate roof tiles were traditional. When split into natural layers, slate gave light and thin tiles. Slate is not a cheap material anymore and is also quite uncommon these days. Many roofing company are well known for their services.

  • Flat tiles: These are the simplest and most common type of tiles and are placed in regular rows that overlap. One example of this is the ‘beaver-tail’ tile that is made out of clay. Flat tiles are generally made of clay, but in some cases, they can also be made of wood, stone, plastic, or concrete too.

  • Roman tiles: these tiles allow interlocking because they are designed in that way – a flat middle, the convex curve at one end, and concave at the opposite.
  • Pantiles: These tiles allow interlocking too since they have an S-shaped outline. The pattern resulted give an appearance of a plowed field. Double Roman tile is one of the examples of these tiles which dates back to the late 19th century in the US and England.
  • Barrel tiles: These tiles are arranged in alternating columns of concave and convex because of their semi-cylindrical shape. These tiles were originally shaped around a curved surface, like a tree log or the thigh of tile maker. Barrel tiles today are mass-produced from concrete, clay, or plastic.
  • Interlocking roof tiles: Just like pantiless side and top of these tiles lock, which gives better protection from the wind and water.
  • Antefixes: These are vertical blocks that terminate the covering tiles of a tiled roof.
